Royal Caribbean International’s mega ship Allure of the Seas has rescued a group of 58 Haitians that were found adrift in the Caribbean.
It is thought that a passenger onboard Allure of the Seas, world’s joint largest cruise ship, alerted the ship’s crew to the boat. According to reports the captain then turned the ship and sailed towards It.
The group of Haitian men and women stated they did not need any help when the captain made contact with them, so Allure of the Seas continued on her journey.
Allure’s captain made contact with the U.S. Coast Guard to alert them of the vessel and was asked to turn around and take the passengers onboard. Royal Caribbean have not said why the Coast Guard made this request.
The stranded sailors were found in a makeshift wooden vessel. The Cozumel port captain’s office stated there were 47 men, seven women and four boys’ onboard.
The group was picked up by the ship and in compliance with international law they were turned over yesterday morning to Mexican authorities in Cozumel. Mexican authorities said they were set to the immigration station in Chetumal, capital of the south-eastern state of Quintana Roo, for processing.
