occasionally we hear of incidents on cruise ships where passengers or crew have fallen over board or where fire has broken out and so on.
When cruising you need to remember some basics in order to stay safe. Firstly do not sit on any of the ships side bars. This is extremely dangerous and by doing this you are in fact risking your life. If you were to fall from the ship the chances of survival can be very slim especially at night. Cruise ships are huge in size and it is often possible to find certain areas completely empty of passengers and crew during the evenings on the open decks. It may be a thrill to hang 17 storeys above the ocean but it is far from sensible.
Another element which could be potentially catastrophic on a cruise ship is fire. If you smoke please do not throw your cigarette end over the ships side. It could in fact be drawn back into the ship and lie un noticed thus causing a fire. Cruise ships provide various sand buckets for you to safely discard of your cigarette.
Be cautious of slippery surfaces. There is one cruise ship which shall remain nameless that I have found to be a nightmare when it comes to the close surrounding area of its pools. Once the floor is wet it can be lethal, this really goes for any cruise ship so please take care and do not run! If you can avoid trekking through the damp area then please do.
During port trips many people often prefer to venture off on their own, avoiding organised excursions. If you are one of these people please remember to plan your journey and take into account any places you should potentially avoid. If you are not entirely sure then stick with the planned excursions that the cruise lines offer. They are a safer option and should anything crop up the ship will wait for you. Run late because of your own little adventure and you may well return to the dock to find your ship has sailed without you.
These are just a few of the ways to make your cruise holiday safer and more enjoyable, it’s common sense with many things but you would be surprised!
