Line: Royal Caribbean
When it comes down to niche cruise operators, few are targeted solely at the traveller over fifty years of age, and fewer still create a product that offers a bespoke, beautifully crafted travel package that completely encapsulates just about everything that you could wish for. And, if you wanted that same, elusive product to be something aimed solely at British cruise passengers, then your only real option would have to be the two ships currently sailing for Saga Cruises.
The line currently operates two ships- the 38,000 ton, 820 guest Saga Sapphire and the smaller, 19,000 ton, 500 guest Saga Pearl II. In 2019, Saga Pearl II will be replaced by the line's first dedicated new build, the stunning new Spirit of Discovery, a beautiful ship deliberately designed to revive the look- and the feel- of the classic ocean liners of the Atlantic crossing.
While prices for Saga cruises are higher than mainstream cruise lines, there is a degree of care and inclusivity to the product that makes it hugely appealing to legions of returning 'Saganauts', as the repeat passengers are called. Firstly, the line includes chauffeur driven transfers from anywhere in the country to the departure port, or the option of complimentary rail, coach or even air tickets. And insurance is included as standard in all bookings, unless declined, in which case a small amount is deducted from the overall fare.
Saga also includes complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks with both lunch and dinner, a free sailaway drinks party, and free wi-fi throughout both ships. Complimentary shuttle buses are included at all ports where this is practical, and the line offers the option of being able to dine at a traditional, two sitting option, or eating at a time that suits passengers each day.
In terms of dining, the cuisine is typically outstanding. Saga offers a large number of single cabins on both ships, and has an entertainment programme geared to a more mature audience; think piano bar rather than pounding disco, and cool jazz in one of the lounges most evenings. The libraries of both ships are large and well stocked, and both ships offer the rare feature of an indoor swimming pool, as well as an outdoor one.
Outdoor decks come complete with umbrella shaded tables, and no shortage of comfortable sun loungers. In short, Saga offers grown up ships for grown up people who appreciate elegance, inclusivity, and the chance to see the world in a style that has largely vanished in today's modern travel world.
